Rolla, Missouri is the county seat of Phelps County. The state officially established Rolla as a town in 1858. Rolla is mid-way between the cities of St. Louis and Springfield on I-44. Rolla is an important center for state and federal research and education in technology and science. Rolla is home to the Missouri University of Science and Technology formerly known as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1870 and University of Missouri-Rolla from 1964-2007. As the headquarters of the Mark Twain National Forest, Rolla holds the only United States National Forest in Missouri. Rolla, a part of the Ozark Highlands American Viticultural Area, is home to numerous vineyards that were originally established by Italian immigrants to the area. Rolla is home to many notable political figures such as Mel, Jean, Robin and Russ Carnahan, our current United States Senator from Missouri, Claire McCaskill as well as former State Treasurer, Sarah Steelman.
