Founded in 1866, Moberly, Missouri is mid-Missouri city named after Colonel William E. Moberly. Colonel Moberly was the first president of the Chariton and Randolph County railroads. On June 28, 1944, the USS Scranton was renamed the USS Moberly after the city. Moberly, Missouri is home to two colleges; Central Christian College of the Bible and Moberly Area Community College, the later has branches across mid-Missouri with enrollment above 3,000 students. The city is well-known for the Moberly Midget League, which has been providing a summer baseball program for residents since 1950. Famous Moberly residents include Omar Bradley, an US Army general, Brent Briscoe, an actor and writer, Melvin B. Tolson, a poet laureate of Liberia, and Mike Wilson, a filmmaker.
