Jefferson City, Missouri is the state capital and the county seat for Cole County. Jefferson City was named after the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson City is located on the southern side of the Missouri River in a region known as Mid-Missouri. On the western edge of the Missouri Rhineland, Jefferson City is located in one of the major wine-producing regions of the Midwest. Jefferson City is dominated by the beautiful domed capital which rises over a bluff which overlooks the Missouri River. Lewis and Clark passed under that bluff on their historic journey upriver before any European settlement had taken place there. Jefferson City is home to the historically black Lincoln University with open enrollment and 4 year and graduate degree programs. Jefferson City is the birthplace of many famous citizens such as Cedric the Entertainer, baseball player Joe Crede and author John Farris.
