Mexico, Missouri is the county seat for Audrain County. Mexico is the host of the annual Miss. Missouri pageant and the winner goes on the represent the state of Missouri in the Miss. America pageant. Mexico was originally laid out as “New Mexico” in 1836 and was a major stop for settlers traveling from the Republic of Texas (thus the name New Mexico). The “New” was dropped after the Mexican-American war that saw Texas become a part of the United States. Mexico’s historic downtown square has the typical courthouse as the focal point and is surrounded by dozens of multi-story brick buildings. Mexico, formerly known as “Saddle Horse Capital of the World”, still hosts many celebrities and people from around the world who travel there to purchase riding horses.
