The crash occurred on November 3rd, 2024, at 3:47 PM on Missouri Highway 5, 5 miles north of Keytesville. An 83-year-old driver was operating a John Deere Gator UTV headed northbound, meanwhile a 42-year-old driver was operating a 2008 Ford F-250, also headed northbound. As the UTV slowed to make a left turn, they were struck from behind by the Ford F-250, causing the crash. The 83-year-old driver was seriously injured before being transported via Chariton County Ambulance to University Medical Center, they were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. The 42-year-old driver of the Ford was uninjured. The Gator UTV was totaled while the Ford F-250 was moderately damaged, both vehicles were removed from the scene by their owners.
Due to their relative size and less robust safety features, UTVs pose additional risk to any driver regardless of their age. Utility vehicles like this one are also not typically required to carry liability insurance, so the only recourse for settlement in the event of an accident may be through the insurance of another driver.
