The crash occurred on October 23rd, 2024, around 3:00 PM on Interstate 29 at the 24.2 mile marker. A 2019 Peterbilt tractor trailer driven by a 57-year-old began to skid, causing it to strike the rear of a 2002 Toyota Corolla driven by a 78-year-old along with two passengers, a 44-year-old and an infant. This caused the Corolla to impact with the rear of a 2022 Freightliner tractor trailer driven by a 31-year-old before the Corolla traveled off the right side of the road into a tree line. The first semi-truck then struck the rear of the second semi-truck, causing the second semi to strike the rear of a 2022 Ford F350 with a 47-year-old driver.
The infant passenger was pronounced deceased at Children’s Mercy Hospital. The 78-year-old driver of the vehicle was seriously injured while the 44-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries; both were transported to North Kansas City Hospital via Platte County EMS. The 57-year-old semi-truck driver and the 47-year-old driver of the Ford both sustained minor injuries and planned to seek treatment individually. Both tractor trailers and the Toyota Corolla were totaled while the Ford F350 received minor damage. All vehicles were towed by Express Tow.
