A woman died after being struck by a pickup truck in a Jefferson City parking lot.
Local news reported that the crash happened in the 900 block of West McCarty Street. Court documents cited by ABC 17 News state that surveillance footage showed the driver backing out of a parking space when the truck hit the woman standing behind it.
The woman was taken for medical treatment but later died from her injuries.
Officers later reviewed surveillance footage and identified the driver. The driver was charged with DWI resulting in the death of another person.
When a pedestrian is hit, the focus should be on what the driver did and whether the crash could have been prevented. Drivers must look carefully before backing up, especially in parking lots where people may be walking behind or near vehicles.
If a driver was impaired, distracted, failed to check behind the vehicle, or moved without making sure the area was clear, that conduct can create serious responsibility for the harm caused. In a fatal crash, the driver’s conduct should be taken seriously and persecuted under the law.
