A 17-year-old driver was seriously injured Tuesday evening in a two-vehicle crash in Boone County.
The crash happened around 7:10 p.m. on June 3, 2026, on southbound Route Z, south of I-70. A 2022 Toyota Corolla failed to yield to a 2006 Hyundai Sonata while making a left turn. The front of the Hyundai then struck the left side of the Toyota.
The 17-year-old driver of the Hyundai suffered serious injuries and was taken by EMS to a local hospital. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene.
The crash report states that both drivers were wearing safety devices at the time of the crash.
Left-turn crashes can be especially dangerous because they often happen directly in the path of another vehicle. When a driver turns before it is safe to do so, the approaching driver may have little time to slow down or avoid the collision. In this case, the reported failure to yield led to a serious crash involving a juvenile driver.
This incident highlights the importance of careful judgment before making a left turn, especially near busy routes and interstate access areas. Drivers have a responsibility to yield when required and to make sure the roadway is clear before crossing another vehicle’s path. Failing to yield is not a minor mistake when it places another driver directly in danger. That kind of roadway conduct can cause serious injuries and should be prevented through more cautious, attentive driving.
