Around noon on Sunday, July 13, a three-vehicle accident involving two semi-trucks occurred on Interstate 44 in Franklin County, Missouri. The crash left one person seriously injured.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident happened as two semi-trucks and a Chevrolet Trax approached a previous crash scene on eastbound I-44 at US 50. Both the Trax and one of the semi-trucks began to slow down. While braking, they lost control. The Trax veered off its path, and the semi-truck—affected by its heavy load—slid forward and struck the smaller vehicle. The truck then ran off the road and hit a nearby guardrail.
While this unfolded, a second semi-truck approached the area. Despite the driver’s effort to avoid a collision, the truck struck the towed unit of the first semi-truck.
The driver of the Chevrolet Trax was the only person injured in the crash. They were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, the individual was wearing a seatbelt at the time.
Accidents involving commercial trucks are often complex and dangerous, especially on high-speed roads like I-44. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), large trucks are involved in about 13% of all traffic-related fatalities. Many of these incidents occur in chain-reaction crashes, particularly near stalled or congested areas.
This crash also highlights the danger of secondary accidents, often referred to as “crash cascades.” These occur when vehicles approaching a crash scene can’t stop in time, especially when traffic is already slowed or blocked.
Because semi-trucks pose a higher risk of causing serious accidents, they are required to carry significantly more liability insurance than regular vehicles. Their massive size, heavy loads, and long stopping distances make them more dangerous in sudden braking situations. As a result, trucking companies are held to higher insurance standards.
This means that if you’re injured in an accident with a semi-truck, you may be entitled to greater compensation—including medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. If you have been involved in a similar accident, it is imperative to contact an experienced attorney who can help you pursue the compensation you deserve.
