One person was injured Thursday morning after a crash involving a truck and a car on U.S. 63 in Boone County.
The crash happened around 8:20 a.m. on southbound U.S. 63 near the Discovery Parkway onramp. A car was seen in the ditch after the crash, and the southbound lanes near the onramp were closed while emergency crews responded.
A passenger in the car suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a local hospital. Columbia fire crews assisted police and the Missouri State Highway Patrol at the scene.
Crashes near highway ramps can be especially dangerous because vehicles may be merging, slowing, changing lanes, or reacting to traffic entering the roadway. Drivers must stay alert and leave enough space to respond when conditions change. A moment of inattention near an onramp can quickly send a vehicle off the road and leave an innocent passenger injured.
This crash shows why careful driving is so important on major routes like U.S. 63. Drivers have a responsibility to watch surrounding traffic, control their speed, and avoid creating sudden hazards for others. Conduct that causes a passenger to be hurt and shuts down part of a highway should be taken seriously and addressed under the law.
