On the morning of Thursday, October 2, a frightening accident involving a school bus left several North Callaway students injured in Audrain County, Missouri. The crash happened just minutes before 7:00 AM as many families were starting their day.
The school bus was traveling west on County Road 852, carrying a full load of students on their way to school. At the same time, a 2010 Ford F-150 was headed north on County Road 845. As the truck approached the intersection, it began to slide and was unable to stop in time, colliding directly into the side of the bus.
The force of the impact caused the school bus to tip onto its passenger side, skidding across the road before coming to rest perpendicular to the roadway. The Ford came to its final stop off to the side of the intersection. Both vehicles were declared totaled as a result of the collision.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene to treat those injured. The truck’s driver sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for care. Several students on the bus were also hurt, with five children—ranging in age from nine to 17—taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.
Accidents involving school buses are particularly alarming because of the number of young passengers on board and the potential for widespread injury. While school buses are designed with reinforced structures to help protect riders, their size and lack of seatbelts in many cases can still lead to serious injuries when a rollover or tipping occurs.
This incident underscores the importance of cautious driving near intersections, particularly during early morning hours when school traffic is at its peak. Drivers must remain alert, slow down in rural areas where cross traffic may not be controlled by signals, and account for changing road conditions that can cause vehicles to slide unexpectedly.
