A motorcycle rider was injured Sunday evening after a crash involving an SUV in northwest Columbia.
The crash happened on Garden Drive. Columbia police responded to the area around 7 p.m., and emergency crews were also at the scene. Local media reported that Columbia Fire Department and an MU Health ambulance responded, along with multiple Columbia police vehicles.
The crash involved an SUV and a motorcycle. A witness at the scene said the motorcycle rider was a woman and may have suffered arm and wrist injuries. The SUV driver reportedly had scratches on his face, did not need treatment, and was able to drive away. Police had not confirmed the witness’s statements at the time of the report.
Motorcycle crashes are especially serious because riders have far less protection than people inside cars or SUVs. When a car or SUV strikes a motorcycle, the rider may be thrown, pinned, or exposed directly to the force of the crash. Even injuries that may sound limited at first, such as arm or wrist injuries, can still require significant medical treatment and recovery.
Drivers must use extra caution around motorcycles. Motorcycles are smaller, easier to overlook, and more vulnerable in a collision. A driver turning, pulling out, changing lanes, or moving through a neighborhood street must look carefully before entering a motorcycle’s path.
A motorcycle rider should not have to suffer the consequences of another driver failing to see them or give them enough room. Crashes involving cars and motorcycles should be taken seriously because the harm almost always falls hardest on the rider. Conduct that causes a motorcycle crash and injures a rider should be addressed under the law.
