Lack of Caution Around Motorcycle Causes Serious Collision

blog

On May 2nd at 6:46am, a serious collision involving a motorcycle occurred at 29473 Missouri 41 in Saline County. A 2003 Ford F-250 driven by an 18-year-old man, hit a 2008 Harley Davidson bike in the rear. The bike crossed over the center line and flipped, and the truck hit an embankment after leaving the road. The driver of the bike sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital via helicopter.

Motorcycles are much smaller than other vehicles, so it is imperative we drive with the utmost care around them. The average motorcycle weighs between 300-800 pounds, whereas a Ford F-250 weighs around three tons. Motorcycles also lack the basic safety functions found in cars, like seatbelts, airbags, and roll cages. Due to this, even though motorcycles only make up about 3% of vehicles on the roads, they account for over 15% of fatalities. As well, almost 80% of motorcycle collisions result in an injury or fatality. Missouri has laws in place to protect not only riders, but all drivers on the road. Driving in the vicinity of a motorcycle demands undivided attention, and failing to fulfill that duty can land you in jail for Careless & Imprudent Driving. Following all the laws and adhering to important safety protocols is the only way to keep everyone on the roads safe at all times.
