Inattentive Driver Injures Two in Washington County Crash

blog

Two people were injured Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Washington County.

The crash happened around 3:23 p.m. on September 7, 2026, on Missouri 185 at River Birch Road. A 2026 Ford Explorer was traveling south behind a 2016 Nissan Sentra.

The Nissan driver began slowing because deer were crossing the roadway. The Ford driver was inattentive to the road ahead and allowed the front of the Ford to strike the rear of the Nissan.

Both drivers suffered moderate injuries and were taken by EMS to local hospitals.

Both vehicles were totaled and towed from the scene. The crash report states that both drivers were wearing safety devices at the time of the crash.

Rear-end crashes often happen when a driver fails to watch what is happening ahead. Drivers must be prepared for sudden changes in traffic, especially on roads where animals may cross without warning. A driver who is paying attention should be ready to slow, stop, or react safely when the vehicle ahead brakes.

This crash shows why inattention behind the wheel can have serious consequences. The Nissan driver slowed for a roadway hazard, and the Ford struck the vehicle from behind. Failing to keep a proper lookout is not a harmless mistake when it injures another driver and totals both vehicles.

Drivers have a responsibility to remain alert, leave enough following distance, and control their vehicles at all times. Conduct that causes a rear-end crash because a driver was not paying attention should be taken seriously and addressed under the law.
