Hydroplaning Crash Involving School Bus Injures Two

blog

Two people were injured Tuesday morning in a three-vehicle crash in Callaway County.

The crash happened around 8:02 a.m. on November 3, 2026, on westbound U.S. 54 near County Road 240. A 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee hydroplaned, traveled off the right side of the roadway, and struck a parked 2017 Ford Edge on the shoulder.

The Jeep then returned to the roadway, crossed the center line, and struck a 2003 International school bus.

The driver of the Jeep suffered moderate injuries, while a passenger in the Ford suffered minor injuries. Both were taken by EMS to a local hospital.

The Jeep was totaled and towed from the scene. The Ford sustained moderate damage, while the school bus sustained minor damage. Both were driven from the scene.

Hydroplaning can occur when water collects on a roadway and causes a vehicle’s tires to lose contact with the pavement. Drivers may suddenly lose control of their steering or braking, putting nearby motorists at risk.

Drivers must adjust their speed to wet conditions, maintain safe following distances, and remain alert for standing water. However, roadway safety also depends on proper drainage, maintenance, and warnings about known hazards.

When dangerous road conditions contribute to a crash, the circumstances should be reviewed to determine whether the roadway was reasonably safe. Injured motorists may have grounds to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, and other damages if another driver’s negligence or an unsafe roadway condition contributed to their injuries.
