Just after 8pm on Friday, September 13, a crash occurred that resulted in a minor being seriously injured in Pulaski County, Missouri.
On Highway 17 near Buford Lane, a 12-year-old girl was operating a Can-Am Outlander four-wheeler in the southbound lane. As she began to slow, a 2017 Nissan Frontier rear ended the four-wheeler, causing serious injuries to the young girl. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the Nissan, a 19-year-old, did not sustain any injuries but the collision did moderate damage to their vehicle.
Accidents like this highlight the importance of roadway safety for drivers of all ages and vehicle types. Highways often involve fast-moving traffic and limited reaction times, which can increase risks when larger vehicles and smaller, less-protected ones share the same space. Motorists are reminded of the need to keep a safe following distance, especially when approaching vehicles that may need to slow or stop suddenly.
For those operating recreational vehicles such as four-wheelers, safety considerations become even more important. These vehicles are generally smaller, lower to the ground, and offer less protection than cars or trucks, which can leave riders more vulnerable during collisions. Wearing appropriate safety gear, including helmets, reflective clothing, and protective padding, can make a significant difference in reducing injury risks.
Additionally, visibility plays a key role in preventing roadway accidents. Ensuring that vehicles—whether trucks, cars, or recreational vehicles—have proper lighting and are easily noticeable to other motorists can improve overall safety. Drivers are also encouraged to remain attentive, especially during evening hours when visibility begins to decrease.
This crash serves as a reminder that safe driving practices benefit everyone on the road. Whether operating a passenger vehicle or a recreational one, maintaining awareness, allowing extra space, and practicing defensive driving are all steps that can help reduce the likelihood of serious accidents.
