Two people were seriously injured Tuesday evening in a three-vehicle crash in Chariton County.
The crash happened around 5:17 p.m. on August 4, 2026, on U.S. 24, about four miles east of Salisbury. A 2023 Kia Forte struck the rear of a 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Kia then traveled into the path of a 2019 Dodge Caravan and struck it head-on.
The driver of the Kia suffered serious injuries and was taken by EMS to a local hospital. The driver of the Dodge also suffered serious injuries and was taken for emergency medical treatment.
The Kia and Dodge were both totaled. The Jeep sustained extensive damage. All three vehicles were towed from the scene.
Rear-end crashes can become especially dangerous when the striking vehicle does not remain under control after the first impact. In this case, the Kia struck the rear of one vehicle and then crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle, causing a head-on collision. That chain of events created serious danger for drivers who had little time to react.
Head-on crashes are among the most severe collisions because both vehicles can absorb a violent force of impact. Drivers have a responsibility to stay alert, maintain control, and avoid following or striking vehicles in a way that creates a second, more dangerous crash. Conduct that sends a vehicle into oncoming traffic and seriously injures another driver should be taken seriously and addressed under the law.
