Frightening Semi Collision on I-70 Through Callaway County

blog

On the afternoon of Friday, July 11, construction on Interstate 70 in Callaway County contributed to a wreck involving a semi-truck that left one individual seriously injured. Around 2:40pm in the eastbound lanes, traffic had begun to slow as vehicles approached a designated work zone. During this time, a Freightliner semi-truck and a Toyota 4Runner were both attempting to merge to the right when the collision occurred.

The Freightliner struck the rear of the 4Runner, causing the Toyota to hit a concrete barrier. The vehicle became wedged between the semi-truck and the barrier, and was ultimately totaled due to the extent of the damage. The driver of the Toyota sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Crashes involving commercial trucks like Freightliners can carry added legal and financial implications. Due to their size, weight, and federal regulation, semi-trucks are held to a higher safety and operational standard than standard passenger vehicles. Trucking companies and drivers are subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rules covering hours of service, vehicle maintenance, load securing, and more.

Semi-truck collisions tend to be more severe, which is why commercial trucks are typically required to carry much higher liability insurance than standard vehicles. Their large size, heavy loads, and slower stopping capabilities make them more dangerous in emergency situations. As a result, victims of truck accidents may have access to greater compensation for things like medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering. If you’ve been hurt in a crash involving a semi-truck, it’s wise to speak with a qualified attorney who can guide you through your legal options and help protect your rights.
