At approximately 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 27, a fatal crash occurred on Route AB in Boone County, Missouri, claiming the life of a 23-year-old man. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the man had exited his parked Toyota Camry—which remained partially in the eastbound lane—when he was struck by an oncoming Ram 1500 pickup truck traveling westbound.
Authorities report that the Ram crossed the center line, first colliding with the Camry before hitting the victim, who was standing outside his vehicle. The man was pronounced dead at the scene within minutes of the collision.
The driver of the Ram, a 20-year-old Columbia resident, was arrested shortly after the incident. Charges include driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a fatal accident, careless and imprudent driving, operating a vehicle without a valid license, and minor in possession of a controlled substance. He is currently being held without bond at the Boone County Jail.
This heartbreaking incident underscores the devastating consequences of impaired driving. Alcohol and drug impairment behind the wheel is a leading cause of preventable traffic deaths nationwide. In a split second, one person’s reckless decision can result in irreversible tragedy for victims and their families.
Pedestrians and individuals outside of vehicles are particularly at risk in these types of crashes. With no physical protection against the force of a moving vehicle, the outcome is often fatal—especially when high speeds or intoxication are involved.
In fatal crashes involving intoxicated drivers, the legal consequences extend beyond criminal charges. Surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit, which can help recover compensation for funeral expenses, medical costs, lost wages, and emotional suffering. In cases involving gross negligence or illegal behavior—such as impaired driving—civil courts may also award punitive damages, meant to punish egregious conduct and deter others from repeating similar actions.
If you or someone you love has been impacted by a serious crash involving intoxication, it’s important to seek legal guidance. You may be entitled to compensation for your losses—and your actions could help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
