One person died and another was seriously injured Saturday afternoon in a head-on crash on Forum Boulevard in Columbia.
The crash happened around 2:25 p.m. in the 2900 block of Forum Boulevard near Hinkson Creek. Traffic was stalled or redirected for upwards of three hours while emergency crews responded.
The crash involved two vehicles. A red Chevrolet Malibu was seen across the middle of the road facing northbound, while a silver Chevrolet Impala was facing southbound. Both vehicles had smashed front bumpers, and the Impala’s airbags had deployed.
A 46-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken by EMS to a local hospital. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of collisions because the force of impact is often severe. When two vehicles collide front to front, the people inside may have little protection from the violent energy of the crash. On a city road like Forum Boulevard, a vehicle entering the wrong lane or crossing into opposing traffic can leave another driver with little or no time to avoid impact.
When a crash causes this level of harm, the conduct that led to it should be taken seriously and addressed under the law. Fatal crashes leave families grieving and survivors facing serious injuries, medical treatment, and lasting consequences. Drivers must use caution every time they get behind the wheel because one wrong decision can permanently change multiple lives.
