Just after 7:15 AM on Wednesday, December 10, a devastating head-on collision occurred on Highway 72 near County Road 2300 in Dent County, Missouri. The crash occurred as a 2017 Chevrolet Spark traveling eastbound veered over the center line and struck a westbound 2015 Dodge Charger.
The driver of the Spark, a 60-year-old man, was not wearing a seatbelt. He suffered fatal injuries sustained in the accident and was pronounced deceased on the scene less than 30 minutes after the collision.
Inside the Dodge Charger, the crash resulted in catastrophic injuries. A newborn passenger was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased at 8:21 AM. Another juvenile passenger—just a year old—suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital for emergency treatment.
The 31-year-old woman driving the Charger also sustained serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Salem Memorial Hospital. All occupants of the Dodge were reportedly wearing seatbelts. Both vehicles were totaled and had to be towed from the scene.
While the report confirms only that the Chevrolet Spark crossed the center line, incidents like this illustrate how quickly a lapse in control—regardless of cause—can become fatal. Center-line crossings leave the oncoming vehicle with little to no time to react, especially on two-lane highways where speeds are often high and shoulder room is limited.
Drivers share a responsibility to maintain proper lane control at all times, particularly during morning hours when lighting, fatigue, or visibility may vary. Losing command of a vehicle for even a moment can have irreversible consequences, as shown by this tragedy. Our hearts go out to the victims of this accident and similar ones, and hope that it serves as a demonstration of the importance of attentiveness and adherence to the laws.
All facts reported upon are based on preliminary investigation done by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
