blog

A fatal crash occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, December 21, in Lafayette County, Missouri, resulting in the death of a 72-year-old woman. The collision took place around 4:02 PM on MO-13, just north of Highway U.

The crash occurred as a 2021 Nissan Sentra was traveling northbound when a 2019 Ford F-250 traveling southbound became involved in the crash. Reporting cites that the Nissan lost control, began skidding sideways into the southbound lane, and was struck by the Ford pickup. After impact, the Nissan traveled off the left side of the roadway, while the Ford came to rest in the roadway.

The driver of the Nissan, a 72-year-old woman, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS. She was reportedly wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Ford F-250, a 48-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and transported himself by private vehicle to a local care center for treatment. He was also noted to be wearing a seatbelt.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage, with the Nissan totaled and the Ford sustaining extensive damage. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Major Crash Team, Higginsville Fire and EMS, Johnson County Fire/EMS, and local law enforcement.

Crashes involving loss of control and cross-lane impacts are particularly dangerous because they often occur with little warning to oncoming drivers. When a vehicle enters an opposing lane, the opportunity to avoid a collision is limited, increasing the likelihood of serious or fatal injuries.

According to statewide traffic data, fatal crashes on Missouri highways frequently involve loss of vehicle control and lane departure, especially on rural roadways. These incidents highlight the importance of maintaining control, reducing speed when conditions change, and remaining attentive at all times.

All facts reported upon are based on preliminary investigation done by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
