Twelve people were killed Sunday morning when a skydiving aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff near Butler Memorial Airport in Butler, Missouri.
According to authorities, the aircraft went down at approximately 11:30 a.m. on June 14 after departing from the airport about 60 miles south of Kansas City. Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that all 12 occupants aboard the aircraft perished in the crash. The victims included the pilot and 11 passengers who were participating in a skydiving outing.
Officials said the aircraft, a Pacific Aerospace P750 operated by Skydive Kansas City, was unable to gain sufficient altitude after takeoff. Witnesses reported seeing the plane make a sharp turn before crashing approximately 300 yards from the runway. Airport officials indicated the pilot may have been attempting an emergency landing before the aircraft went down.
Emergency responders from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Butler Police Department, Bates County Sheriff’s Office, and other agencies responded to the scene. The crash site was engulfed in flames upon impact, and nearby roads were temporarily closed while crews secured the area.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. Officials have not yet determined the cause of the incident, and investigators are expected to review the aircraft’s maintenance history, operational records, and other factors as part of the ongoing investigation.
Aviation accidents involving skydiving operations are relatively uncommon but can be especially devastating because of the number of occupants often aboard these specialized aircraft. Following any fatal aviation crash, investigators carefully examine mechanical, operational, environmental, and human factors to determine what led to the incident and whether similar accidents can be prevented in the future.
