One person was injured Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 44 in Franklin County.
The crash happened around 3:50 p.m. on August 13, 2026, on westbound I-44 at mile marker 258.4. Both vehicles slowed to avoid traffic congestion ahead and moved to the left. The front of a 2022 Chevrolet 2500 HD then struck the rear of a 2026 BMW X3.
The driver of the BMW suffered moderate injuries and was taken by EMS to a local hospital.
The BMW sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene. The Chevrolet also sustained moderate damage but was driven from the scene. The crash report states that both drivers were wearing safety devices at the time of the crash.
Rear-end crashes in traffic congestion are especially dangerous because drivers ahead may be slowing, stopping, or moving to avoid a hazard. A driver approaching from behind must leave enough space to react safely. When traffic changes suddenly, following too closely or failing to slow in time can cause an avoidable crash.
This crash shows why attention and safe following distance matter on busy interstates. Congestion is not an excuse to strike the back of another vehicle. Drivers have a responsibility to watch traffic ahead, control their speed, and avoid placing others in danger. Conduct that causes a rear-end crash and injures another driver should be taken seriously and addressed under the law.
