The crash occurred on September 15th, 2024, at 6:47 PM on Highway 28, east of Highway C. A 21-year-old driver was operating a 2008 Dodge RAM 2500 headed westbound. In the other lane, a 41-year-old driver was operating a 2005 Subaru Outback headed eastbound. The Subaru Outback then crossed the center line and struck the Dodge RAM 2500 head-on, causing the crash. The Subaru went off the right side of the roadway while the Dodge went off the left side of the roadway and overturned. The 21-year-old driver was ejected from their vehicle before being transported to University Hospital via Arch 6 medical helicopter. They were pronounced deceased at the hospital. The 41-year-old driver was uninjured, and neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Highway driving at night can be dangerous due to high speeds and decreased visibility. Unfortunately, head-on collisions like this are particularly threatening, accounting for 59% of all passenger vehicle occupant deaths in the United States in 2022 (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2022). Nothing can fully prepare you for the unexpected death of a family member or loved one. It can be particularly difficult to navigate the aftermath of the tragedy of a motor vehicle accident due to the many involved parties – including insurance companies, medical facilities, and reporting agencies.
