A Columbia man is dead and two others are seriously injured after a crash in Callaway County Saturday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s online crash reports, the incident happened at 12 a.m. at Chapel UTV Trail on Wildwood Estates Dr.

Donald Lay of St. Charles, 55, was driving a Kawasaki KRFT up an extreme incline when he lost traction and overturned back down the hill.

Lay and one of the passengers, Bethany Johnson of Columbia, 39, experienced serious injuries. Lay was taken by air ambulance to University Hospital and Johnson was taken by Callaway EMS to University Hospital.

The other passenger, Richard Bryant, 55, was taken to the Callaway/Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office and was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m.

None of the riders were wearing a safety device.

According to the report, this is Troop F’s third fatality for the month of June and the 34th fatality of the year.

Dealing with the death of a loved one is often one of the worst experiences an individual could endure. This is especially true when the death of that family member could be attributed to the negligence of another person. Fortunately, Missouri law allows the decedent’s family to pursue justice and compensation for a wrongful death.
