Two people were killed and one was seriously injured in a Friday night collision on Interstate 44 in Crawford County.
The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. on May 8, 2026, on eastbound I-44 near the 218-mile marker. A 2022 Ram 2500 was traveling westbound when it went off the left side of the roadway, struck cable barriers, and overturned into the eastbound lanes. A 2006 Ford Taurus then struck the Ram, causing the Taurus to strike a 2022 Toyota Highlander.
A 64-year-old female passenger in the Ford Taurus was killed and pronounced dead at the scene. The 56-year-old driver of the Taurus and a 64-year-old male passenger both suffered serious injuries and were taken by EMS to local hospitals. One of the passengers that was transported passed away later due to injuries.
The Ram and Ford Taurus were both totaled and towed from the scene. The Toyota Highlander sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.
The facts of this crash point to a terrifying and avoidable situation created by the Ram. When a westbound pickup left its side of the interstate, hit the cable barriers, and overturned into the eastbound lanes, it created an immediate hazard for drivers who had every reason to expect their lane of travel to be clear. The people in the Taurus were placed in an impossible position: a vehicle suddenly crossed into their direction of travel and left them with little to no time to avoid impact.
That is what makes this crash so serious. The Taurus occupants were not simply involved in a collision; they were put directly in harm’s way by the Ram’s movement across the interstate. On a high-speed roadway like I-44, drivers cannot reasonably prepare for a pickup overturning into their lane from the opposite side of traffic. The Taurus became the target of a danger it did not create.
Drivers have a responsibility to maintain control of their vehicles, watch their speed, and stay alert to roadway conditions. When a driver loses control so severely that the vehicle crosses cable barriers and enters oncoming interstate lanes, the consequences can be catastrophic. In this case, the result was fatal.
This kind of roadway conduct should be treated with the seriousness it deserves. The innocent victims in the Taurus were forced into a crash because another vehicle entered their path. Behavior that causes a vehicle to leave its lane, cross into opposing traffic, and trigger a deadly crash should be addressed to the fullest extent of the law.
