One person was injured Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Shelby County.
The crash happened around 7:25 a.m. on August 13, 2026, on U.S. Highway 36 at Shelbina. Both vehicles were traveling westbound when a 2026 Buick was stopped at a stop sign. A 2020 Volvo truck tractor then struck the rear of the Buick.
The driver of the Buick suffered moderate injuries and was taken by EMS to a local hospital.
The Buick sustained extensive damage, and the Volvo truck tractor sustained moderate damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The crash report states that both drivers were wearing safety devices at the time of the crash.
Rear-end crashes involving large trucks can be especially dangerous because of the size and weight difference between the vehicles. A stopped vehicle at a stop sign is not an unexpected hazard. Drivers approaching from behind must be prepared to slow down, stop, and leave enough space to avoid a collision.
This crash shows why commercial drivers must use extra caution when approaching intersections and stopped traffic. A truck tractor requires more time and distance to stop than a passenger vehicle, which makes speed control and attention even more important. Striking the rear of a stopped vehicle can cause serious harm to an innocent driver and should be taken seriously under the law.
