Two people were injured Saturday evening in a crash involving a go-kart and a dirt bike in Cooper County.
The crash happened around 5:25 p.m. on June 27, 2026, on Rocheport Road just east of Missouri 98. A Murray go-kart stopped in the roadway for an unknown reason when a Honda dirt bike struck it from behind. The impact caused the go-kart to overturn.
The 33-year-old go-kart driver was ejected, and the vehicle came to rest on top of him. He suffered serious injuries and was taken by EMS to a local hospital. The 15-year-old dirt bike driver was also ejected and suffered minor injuries. His dirt bike came to rest in a nearby ditch.
Both vehicles sustained moderate damage. The report lists the dirt bike driver as using a safety device, while the go-kart driver’s safety device use was listed as no.
Stopping a small recreational vehicle in an active roadway can create an immediate and dangerous hazard for approaching traffic. Unlike a passenger car, a go-kart sits low to the ground and may be harder for another driver to see, especially if there is little time to react. A rider approaching from behind may have no meaningful chance to avoid impact once the vehicle is stopped in the travel lane.
This crash shows why ATVs, dirt bikes, go-karts, and similar recreational vehicles must be operated with the same caution expected of any other vehicle near public roads. A vehicle should not be stopped in an active roadway unless there is a clear emergency and reasonable steps are taken to warn approaching traffic. Conduct that creates an unexpected obstruction in the road can place other riders in an impossible situation and lead to severe injuries within seconds.
